Systemic shake-up: it takes HR to do things right

BrewDog has launched a mental health support service for its 3,000 employees globally.

Through a partnership with Happence, a mental health and wellbeing platform, the pub chain and brewery is now providing staff with access to an app that it hopes will help them achieve health and happiness.

Once they sign up, individuals can benefit from a personalised programme that can assist with various areas of wellness, including sleep and rest, as well as feelings and thoughts. They can also track their progress through the app and monitor their development in these areas.

Built by experts in the industry, including cognitive behaviour therapists, neuroscientists and psychologists, Happence was founded eight years ago by psychiatrist Dr Stephen Pereira.

BrewDog says the programme is one of many investments it has made in its HR, people and culture teams under its brand road map dubbed its “blueprint”. According to its group people director, Karen Bates, the company now has 149 trained mental health aiders working for the business.

The blueprint, which was launched to mark the company’s fifteenth anniversary, set out a number of new rewards which included a share scheme for salaried employees worth £100 million and another share scheme for its bar profits of 50%.

BrewDog has recently seen a huge uplift in applications for jobs at the company, adding 700 staff members to its workforce last year.

Benefits Unboxed – Wellbeing: HR is supporting everyone, but who’s supporting HR?
byBenefits Expert from Definite Article Media

As the professionals responsible for helping their organisations navigate NI hikes, rising employee stress levels and looming redundancies, the pressure on HR, reward and benefits teams has never been greater.

HR is expected to lead with strength and compassion. But who is supporting the supporters?

In this episode of Benefits Unboxed, co-hosts Claire Churchard, Carole Goldsmith and Steve Herbert explore the emotional and ethical pressures HR face today, from managing redundancies to implementing complex legislation. They discuss why HR’s own wellbeing may not be the first topic of conversation, the risks that poses to employers, and the practical steps businesses can take to better support the wellbeing of the people who support everyone else.

This conversation shines a light on the resilience of the profession and why looking after HR is not just the right thing to do, but a business imperative.
