Systemic shake-up: it takes HR to do things right

Financially contributing to staff weddings is one of a list of employee benefits being offered by a Suffolk-headquartered business in a bid to improve retention.

Hughes Electrical, which employs more than 600 people across East Anglia, is offering its workers £500 towards weddings and civil partnerships.

The company is also setting up a £250 junior ISA for employees’ new babies, and has reinvested more than £250,000 on two holiday lodges in Norfolk for which any member of staff, except senior management, can apply for a week’s holiday free of charge.

Adam Callingham, who works for Hughes Warehouse in Thetford, described the perk as “just amazing”. He told the East Anglian Daily Times: “We took advantage of everything on offer. It was just perfect, a true family treat.”

Mark Wardell, managing director of Hughes Electrical, told the newspaper that the scheme has been a big success.

“We see the introduction of the lodges as the icing on the cake as it offers staff the opportunity to enjoy a great holiday,” he said.

Wardell also said the various benefits are achieving the company’s objectives. “We have achieved tangible benefits, not only with excellent internal feedback, but staff turnover is down and considerably below the average for our industry,” he explained.

“Achieving this level of staff benefits has taken considerable time and money but we regard it as a worthwhile investment in the future success of Hughes,” he added.

byBenefits Expert from Definite Article Media

As the professionals responsible for helping their organisations navigate NI hikes, rising employee stress levels and looming redundancies, the pressure on HR, reward and benefits teams has never been greater.

HR is expected to lead with strength and compassion. But who is supporting the supporters?

In this episode of Benefits Unboxed, co-hosts Claire Churchard, Carole Goldsmith and Steve Herbert explore the emotional and ethical pressures HR face today, from managing redundancies to implementing complex legislation. They discuss why HR’s own wellbeing may not be the first topic of conversation, the risks that poses to employers, and the practical steps businesses can take to better support the wellbeing of the people who support everyone else.

This conversation shines a light on the resilience of the profession and why looking after HR is not just the right thing to do, but a business imperative.
