Aldi has revealed plans to increase employees’ hourly pay to a minimum of £12 nationally and to £13.25 for those inside the M25.

The supermarket has announced that the new rates will apply to staff working in its stores and warehouses – which will be awarded according to length of service – from 1 February 2024.

Introduced as part of a £67 million investment in employee pay, the increase will ensure Aldi’s workforce is still paid in line with the Living Wage Foundation’s new real living wage that was announced in October 2023.

Store assistants nationally will see their wages rise to £12.95, while those within the M25 will receive £13.85 per hour. Salaried staff will also be awarded pay increases.

Giles Hurley, chief executive officer of Aldi UK and Ireland, said: “Just as we promise to provide the best value to our customers, we are also committed to being the highest-paying supermarket in the sector.”

“We are incredibly proud of every single member of Team Aldi and this is a way of thanking them for all their hard work over the past year. We believe our colleagues are the best in the sector and they play a huge part in making Aldi what it is today.”

Aldi also offers its staff paid breaks, which it says are worth an extra £900 a year per employee.

The supermarket is Britain’s fourth largest, with 1,000-plus stores, 11 distribution centres regionally and a 40,000-strong workforce.
