Digital healthcare is transforming the way we approach medical services, making healthcare more affordable and accessible for everyone. The main benefits of digital healthcare include its ease of access, the prompt delivery of services, and its capacity to connect patients with healthcare providers no matter where they might be.

Bupa recognises the importance of people being able to access healthcare at a time that’s convenient for them. Bupa Well+ is a digital subscription product that allows subscribers access to healthcare services via the ‘My Bupa’ app.

Did you know that nearly one-third of the UK population (that’s over 20 million people) experience musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions such as arthritis or back pain, which can cause pain, stiffness, loss of mobility, and disability that impacts quality of life and independence.

Poor MSK health significantly impacts the workforce, their employers, and the wider economy. MSK conditions result in the loss of over 30 million working days annually in the UK and account for up to 30 percent of GP consultations in England. Back, neck, and shoulder pain are common among adults during their working lives, often leading to sickness absence.

Aside from the physical symptoms, MSK conditions can negatively affect mental wellbeing. Pain can lower mood and energy levels, potentially leading to anxiety or depression.

Equally, stress and poor mental health can cause physical symptoms and worsen existing pain, Bupa knows that offering health and wellbeing support to employees is crucial. Whether it’s accessing physiotherapy support or mental health services, Bupa Well+ offers convenient access digitally through the My Bupa app.

Employment plays a crucial role in maintaining overall health, with research showing that staying employed supports both physical and mental wellbeing. Early detection and effective management of MSK conditions typically prevent the need for employees to take time off work.

Some musculoskeletal problems can be caused or exacerbated by workplace factors. These may include:

  • Bending, twisting, or reaching
  • Moving heavy loads
  • Incorrect use of display screen equipment such as laptops, tablets, and smartphones
  • Prolonged sitting or standing without taking breaks
  • Using power tools and operating heavy machinery
  • Heavy workloads and high job demand
  • Working while overtired or injured

Addressing factors that contribute to the development of MSK conditions in the workplace is important. Employers can support their teams by understanding their needs, conducting risk assessments, and ensuring that workstations are designed to support good posture and reduce strain.

The US DEI Rollback: What It Means for UK Employers
byBenefits Expert from Definite Article Media

The US retreat from diversity, equality and inclusion (DEI) is making waves far beyond the country's borders. In the wake of President Trump’s executive order abolishing DEI across federal government departments, global firms like Goldman Sachs and Accenture have rapidly dialled down their own efforts.

The influence is being felt in the UK too. However, the UK operates under a different legal framework. It has stronger workplace protections and a government actively looking to enhance employee rights through its Make Work Pay agenda. But as US firms reposition their approach to DEI, UK subsidiaries could find themselves caught between conflicting priorities.

In the latest Benefits Unboxed podcast, co-hosts Claire Churchard, editor of Benefits Expert, Carole Goldsmith, HR director at the Royal Horticultural Society, and Steve Herbert, industry veteran and reward and benefits consultant, discuss how the US DEI rollback might impact UK businesses.
