As people across the UK worry about ‘dental deserts’ and access to oral health, dentists themselves are seeking more support at work, according to research from Bupa Dental Care.
Research, published as part of the provider’s campaign, shows that dental practitioners prioritise work-life balance (35 percent), training and development (31 percent), and a collaborative, supportive culture (29 percent) when it comes to their career.
However, 33 percent feel there are limited opportunities for progression and a lack of mentoring. A quarter of respondents said they want to make a meaningful impact in the industry, while 24 percent want to feel valued and work somewhere they are proud of.
This group of professionals told researchers that access to mental health services (40 percent), peer mentoring (38 percent), and better support for physical pain (38 percent) would improve their wellbeing at work. More than a third (37 percent) also said that a more flexible work environment would help, particularly during menopause or when they have caring responsibilities.
Bupa said its campaign is designed to support dental professionals and patients
Poor oral health can drive absenteeism and access to care requires healthy and engaged dental professionals. Environments where dental teams feel valued and supported are critical to retention, safeguarding patient access, and addressing the wider ‘dental desert’ challenge.
Dental anxiety remains a common barrier to people accessing care, the provider added. By helping patients feel more comfortable in the dentist’s chair, and supporting dental professionals in their careers, the aim is to apply a holistic approach that ensures “wellbeing for all”.
Mark Allan, general manager for Bupa Dental Care, said: “The dentist’s chair is at the heart of every surgery, and we want our people to feel as supported as the patients they care for every day. That’s why our Feel at Ease campaign prioritises both sides of the chair [to] make it a place of comfort for patients, while instilling confidence and support for our teams, helping them thrive in their careers, and in turn, deliver the best possible care.
“Our findings highlight the importance of supporting wellbeing in the workplace as well as encouraging professional growth through rewarding career paths.”
