Govt partners with 60 employers to tackle workplace sickness

A number of major insurers — including Aviva, Axa Health, Bupa, Unum, Vitality and Zurich — will be ‘vanguard’ employers in the first phase of the Government backed pilot scheme, aimed at improving workplace health and boosting productivity.

These vanguard employers include many household names –  such as BP, British Airways, Marks and Spencer, Nando’s and Tesco – as well as trade bodies and public sector organisations. These include government departments (such as as the Department for Work and Pensions), educational bodies, such as Waltham Forest College, and a number of NHS trusts and organisations. A number of smaller employers are also included in this initial phase.

The full list of all 60 vanguard employers is included below.

This vanguard scheme was one the key recommendation of the Keep Britain Working Review, led by Charlie Mayfield, which delivered its final report yesterday.

The review proposed a phased approach, with the government working with these 60 vanguard organisations collating evidence, develop effective approaches and set standards on workplace health provision.

The aim is for companies to develop plans ‘stay at work’ and ‘back to health’ plans that could replace the current GP ‘fit note’ system. Mayfield recommended that this is then embedded and rolled out nationally. The report recommended that at this stage  Government may need to incentivise other employers to offer these accredited schemes, via tax relief or national insurance rebates.
