Employers get new tool to fight obesity as Bupa widens weight scheme

Health provider Bupa has added weight management support to its employer corporate health insurance offering.

The provider has increased access to clinical support to help tackle obesity and improve workforce health.

Employers can now offer the plan on an employee-funded, part-funded or fully funded basis, giving staff access to medical and coaching support. Eligible consumer and SME members will receive a free initial remote GP consultation, usually priced at £99, and a 10 percent discount on ongoing monthly costs.

Medication will be provided where appropriate and will be delivered through Bupa Health Clinics. Support includes 24/7 nurse support and a six-month GP review.

An initial GP consultation assesses BMI and weight-related health conditions to determine eligibility.

From January 2026, corporate health insurance clients will be able to include full cover for weight management services and medication, with Bupa offering a range of funding options to increase employee access.

The expansion comes amid rising national concern about obesity. Government data shows that 64.5 percent of adults in England are overweight and 26.5 percent are classed as obese.

Bupa research has found that weight management is the top health goal for UK adults in 2025, yet half of respondents did not know their current weight.

The plan was first launched for self-pay customers through Bupa Health Clinics in 2023 and is now being rolled out more widely to support employers’ workforce wellbeing initiatives.
