Health and wellness business Holland & Barrett has increased pay for its retail employees by 9%, and for its distribution staff by 7%.

The pay deal starts from 1 April, with retail pay rising from £10.05 to £11 per hour, and distribution rates from £10.71 to £11.46. With the introduction of this deal, Holland & Barrett has raised retail pay by 15% over the past year.

The business has more than 5,000 employees, including those working across more than 700 retail locations.

Other financial benefits available to store workers include a 25% Holland & Barrett discount, as well as free online delivery. The business also offers life assurance for all employees, mental health first aiders, access to healthcare, and employee assistance programme (EAP), a flexible holiday policy, gym access and other wellbeing services, and a cycle-to-work scheme.

Anthony Houghton, chief operating officer UK & ROI at Holland & Barrett, said: “We’ve been helping customers improve their health and wellness for over 150 years, and our colleagues are at the heart of how we do this – offering products, services information and advice to support the wellness of their customers in communities across the UK.

“We know our wellness starts with theirs, so we’re delighted to be able to increase pay again for our hourly paid colleagues.”

In 2020, Holland & Barrett introduced income management and real-time pay access for its employees, in partnership with app provider Wagestream. The app also provides financial education and budgeting tools.

Tricia Foster, head of pay and benefits for Holland & Barrett, said: “At Holland and Barrett, we’re really focused on the health and wellbeing of our colleagues as it’s part of our ethos as a company, and this includes focusing on the impact of financial stability on our colleagues’ mental health…We have such a great team, and we want to make sure that they know they’re valued.”

The US DEI Rollback: What It Means for UK Employers
byBenefits Expert from Definite Article Media

The US retreat from diversity, equality and inclusion (DEI) is making waves far beyond the country's borders. In the wake of President Trump’s executive order abolishing DEI across federal government departments, global firms like Goldman Sachs and Accenture have rapidly dialled down their own efforts.

The influence is being felt in the UK too. However, the UK operates under a different legal framework. It has stronger workplace protections and a government actively looking to enhance employee rights through its Make Work Pay agenda. But as US firms reposition their approach to DEI, UK subsidiaries could find themselves caught between conflicting priorities.

In the latest Benefits Unboxed podcast, co-hosts Claire Churchard, editor of Benefits Expert, Carole Goldsmith, HR director at the Royal Horticultural Society, and Steve Herbert, industry veteran and reward and benefits consultant, discuss how the US DEI rollback might impact UK businesses.
