Sodexo staff clock 8 billion steps with gamified wellbeing app

Workers at employer Sodexo UK and Ireland have logged a combined total of 8 billion steps, via YuLife’s gamified wellbeing app, in the last 12 months alone.

The milestone was shared as Bill Buchan, HR director at Sodexo, said: “Colleague wellbeing is crucial if people are to thrive in their workplace.”

In addition to the large umber of steps, Sodexo workers completed 191,000 hours of meditation, and earned 119 million YuCoins, which can be redeemed for high-street shopping vouchers or donated to global causes.

App provider YuLife said 105 million of the earned coins have already been spent. Sodexo staff have used their rewards to plant 4,000 trees, remove 222,000 kg of plastic from the ocean through Ocean Clean Up, donate 3,300 meals, and provide 2 million litres of clean water. When it comes to claiming shopping vouchers, the top three retailers chosen are Amazon, Tesco and Marks and Spencer.

The employer has chosen to highlight the strong wellbeing engagement its workforce has formed using the app as World Wellbeing Week (23–27 June 2025) comes to a close. It said that its partnership with YuLife, a tech-driven insurance provider, has helped thousands of Sodexo employees adopt healthier, more purposeful habits.

Since launching the app in the UK in 2021 and in Ireland in February 2025, one in four of Sodexo’s 30,000-strong workforce has downloaded YuLife and regularly engages in its wellbeing challenges. These include activities such as walking, cycling, and meditating, with employees earning rewards in the form of YuCoin, the platform’s digital currency.

Buchan said that YuLife has contributed to employee wellbeing “by making it easy and enjoyable” to adopt healthier habits. He said that the app gives people at the firm “meaningful ways to invest in their health every day”.

He added: “The uptake and enthusiasm – not to mention a little bit of healthy competition around step counts – is encouraging and we hope to see participation continue to grow in the year ahead.”

Sammy Rubin, CEO and founder at YuLife, added: “We believe wellbeing should be rewarding, empowering and fun. Sodexo’s people have truly embraced this spirit. Logging 8 billion steps and spending those well-earned YuCoin on vouchers at their favourite retailers or converting them into trees planted, plastic removed, and meals donated is exactly the kind of everyday impact we set out to make. It is incredible to see what is possible when a company puts the health and happiness of its people first.”

byBenefits Expert from Definite Article Media

As the professionals responsible for helping their organisations navigate NI hikes, rising employee stress levels and looming redundancies, the pressure on HR, reward and benefits teams has never been greater.

HR is expected to lead with strength and compassion. But who is supporting the supporters?

In this episode of Benefits Unboxed, co-hosts Claire Churchard, Carole Goldsmith and Steve Herbert explore the emotional and ethical pressures HR face today, from managing redundancies to implementing complex legislation. They discuss why HR’s own wellbeing may not be the first topic of conversation, the risks that poses to employers, and the practical steps businesses can take to better support the wellbeing of the people who support everyone else.

This conversation shines a light on the resilience of the profession and why looking after HR is not just the right thing to do, but a business imperative.
