Unum pays record amount in group protection claims; covers 2.8m workers

Benefits provider Unum UK has reported that it paid £516 million in group protection claims in 2024, which is almost equivalent to £10 million of claims paid each week. This level of claims payment represents a new company record, the provider said.

Cancer and mental health were the key drivers behind claims and referrals, which Unum said emphasises the importance of comprehensive support.

The figures were published as the provider said it has seen the number of people it insures with group protection soar by 44 percent over the past five years to now cover 2.8 million people.

In spite of this huge growth, the provider said it has maintained a rehabilitation success rate of 97 percent for individuals supported by its group income protection policy, for two years in a row.

The provider signalled that some of the growth in employee claims and support take up was due to the launch of its employer portal in 2024, which Unum said has enhanced employee access and benefits efficiency.

In addition, the provider’s Help@hand digital service enabled more than 290,000 wellbeing interactions.

Paula Coffey, director of claims, rehab and medical services, said: “Our continued success in helping workers return to work or reach an agreed outcome underscores our unwavering commitment to workplace wellbeing. By consistently going beyond the claim, we provide unparalleled support at every stage of an individual’s health journey – prevention, intervention, and protection – creating healthier and more resilient workforces.”

She continued: “Our latest claims and vocational rehabilitation data reveal the profound impact of workplace protection. Mental health-related conditions accounted for 42 percent of rehabilitation referrals, while cancer was the most common reason for claims across all our insurance products. These serious issues demand high-quality support, which is exactly what we provide.”

Coffey added that the provider is dedicated to providing personalised support rather than a one-size-fits-all solution. “By proactively addressing employee health and wellbeing and supporting their return to work, we are safeguarding the future success and resilience of businesses across the UK.”

The US DEI Rollback: What It Means for UK Employers
byBenefits Expert from Definite Article Media

The US retreat from diversity, equality and inclusion (DEI) is making waves far beyond the country's borders. In the wake of President Trump’s executive order abolishing DEI across federal government departments, global firms like Goldman Sachs and Accenture have rapidly dialled down their own efforts.

The influence is being felt in the UK too. However, the UK operates under a different legal framework. It has stronger workplace protections and a government actively looking to enhance employee rights through its Make Work Pay agenda. But as US firms reposition their approach to DEI, UK subsidiaries could find themselves caught between conflicting priorities.

In the latest Benefits Unboxed podcast, co-hosts Claire Churchard, editor of Benefits Expert, Carole Goldsmith, HR director at the Royal Horticultural Society, and Steve Herbert, industry veteran and reward and benefits consultant, discuss how the US DEI rollback might impact UK businesses.
