Millwall Football Club has introduced an electric vehicle salary sacrifice scheme to enable its employees to make environmentally friendly choices.

The initiative is available to all staff earning more than £24,000 in order to meet minimum wage requirements through a partnership with The Electric Car Scheme. It was launched last month (March) as part of the club’s Lion Living Sustainability programme, its pledge to sustainability which it made earlier this year.

According to the business, it wanted to introduce another sustainable transport option for staff having already moved all its company cars to electric vehicles.

Claire O’Sullivan, head of HR and payroll at Millwall FC, said: “By offering this scheme, we are not only prioritising sustainability at our club but also empowering our employees to make eco-conscious choices. The financial savings and environmental benefits of the scheme are significant, and we are proud to be at the forefront of promoting sustainable initiatives within the football community.”

In addition to offering electric cars, the club has a cycle-to-work scheme and has just introduced a new enhanced employee assistance programme (EAP) which is open to staff and their families. The EAP provides guidance and support, as well as nutrition and wellbeing advice and podcasts that are tailored towards individual needs, along with online fitness plans. The company also provides subsidised meals for all staff.

Employees are also entitled to up to two season tickets for the football matches, up to 25 days of annual leave depending on length of service, a travel season ticket loan, access to a payroll giving scheme, a death in service payment of two times their annual salary and a workplace pension.

O’Sullivan added: “We are under constant review to improve the package of benefits we provide staff, making sure that what we are able to offer does actually benefit that member of staff and is not just a ‘nice to have’.”

byBenefits Expert from Definite Article Media

As the professionals responsible for helping their organisations navigate NI hikes, rising employee stress levels and looming redundancies, the pressure on HR, reward and benefits teams has never been greater.

HR is expected to lead with strength and compassion. But who is supporting the supporters?

In this episode of Benefits Unboxed, co-hosts Claire Churchard, Carole Goldsmith and Steve Herbert explore the emotional and ethical pressures HR face today, from managing redundancies to implementing complex legislation. They discuss why HR’s own wellbeing may not be the first topic of conversation, the risks that poses to employers, and the practical steps businesses can take to better support the wellbeing of the people who support everyone else.

This conversation shines a light on the resilience of the profession and why looking after HR is not just the right thing to do, but a business imperative.
